Phase Change Material and C Change Climate Membrane lead the way in all-weather motorcycle wear technology.

The changing seasons usually require a switch in riding attire - but don't grab your thick winter kit just yet. BMW Motorrad Rider Equipment offers two cutting-edge solutions to extend your riding season: Phase Change Material and the C Change Climate Membrane.

Phase Change Material was initially developed by NASA and comprises of billions of tiny gel-filled capsules, which are specially engineered with a melting point close to the ideal body temperature. When a substance changes state (such as from solid to liquid) it absorbs thermal energy due to the bonds between molecules in the Phase Change gel being broken down.

If the outside temperature rises, the gel inside the capsules absorbs the heat and melts, meaning the excess warmth is prevented from reaching the wearer. When the temperature drops, the capsules re-solidify and the previously stored heat energy is released again. In both situations, the rider's temperature is maintained throughout changes in the weather conditions.

C_Change Climate Membrane is a waterproof, breathable lining material .The one-directional membrane is hydrophilic; it wicks moisture and body heat away from the body, while preventing rain from moving back through in the opposite direction.

But what makes C_Change unique is the composition of the membrane - which alters in size with the external temperature. In cold conditions, the structure is compressed, providing improved insulation and wind resistance. In hot temperatures the membrane opens up further, becoming extremely permeable to water vapour, rapidly wicking away excess body heat and moisture. C_Change expands and contracts to suit external conditions, allowing a garment that self-optimises for weather and climate.

The Phase Change Undersuit offers year-round thermal management from a single garment. The undersuit is made of soft, quick-drying thermal fabric with flexible Phase Change Material panels over key temperature regulation areas - the chest, back, hips, arms and thighs. It costs £105 for the jacket and £75 for the trousers and comes in sizes X to XXL for men and women. Also available is the Phase Change Functional Jacket, a unisex garment designed for wear on and off the bike over an undersuit or t-shirt. It costs £145 and comes in sizes XS-XXL.
